In 2003 less than half of the Scottish population voted. This sent out a resounding message. The political process in Scotland failed to engage people. Young people especially felt outside of the political arena, locally and nationally. We want 2007 to be a year of change. We hope that all eligible voters in Scotland, young and old, will come to the polls. We hope that all those competing in elections, whether for the local council or for Holyrood, whether affiliated to a political party or standing as an independent, can articulate and deliver a vision that voters recognise and support. STV cannot guarantee that the election campaign will be defined by an intelligent and honest debate about ideas rather than tiresome political point scoring. That's up to the candidates. What STV can do is provide choice. The new voting system should encourage people to become informed and to demand more from those who are elected. Above all, we want the STV system to enable the views of young people who vote to reach the ears and plans of the political community. If you don't vote, you don't count!
